Early Bloom

Once every ten years, before the red flowers of the Rutilus Tree fully bloom, the Blossoming Dissimulic will come out of its nest inside the tree to feed. The bright red hairs on its antlers resemble Rutilus flowers and attract a huge array of little critters from the forest. This one week of feeding will sustain the Dissimulic as it hibernates until the next Rutilus blossom.

This painting was done for the cover of ImagineFX 72. The whole issue is on creatures so I was more than excited to do the cover! I also added an hour long tutorial of the making of the cover. It's on the dvd that comes with the magazine. Big thanks goes out to Claire & Paul for being such a joy to work with. Look for it in your local bookstore or buy the issue Here

I'll also have a few prints of "Early Bloom" at San Diego Comicon.

Twins - Totoro Forest Project

The above is my "inner" Totoro.
Title: Twins
Medium: Pen and Ink with Digital
Story: The blue gill-necked centi-plesiosaur is known for its inquisitive nature, sociable disposition, and extremely poor eyesight.

Here's something you'll be hearing a lot about.

This amazing event called the Totoro Forest Project is a fundraising auction that has brought together over 200 distinguished artists from animation, comic books and illustration, to save the Sayama forest (aka Totoro Forest). Hayao Miyazaki used this forest as an inspiration for "Totoro". All proceeds will go to the Totoro no Furusato Forest Foundation, established by Hayao Miyazaki himself. This is the brilliant idea of Dice Tsutsumi, Ronnie del Carmen and Enrico Casarosa.

How does this work? There's an auction held at Pixar on September 6, 2008. There will also be a book produced collecting all the artwork involved in the project.

Check out their wonderful site for some mind blowing pieces !!--> TOTORO FOREST PROJECT

I'm very honored to be a part of it.

And here's the other piece...
I usually don't do many finished works traditionally but it's for a good charity.
Hope you like it.

Title: Dirty Job
Medium: Pen and Ink.
Size: 11x14 inches
Story: Help wanted: Enthusiastic individual, must love animals and working outdoors, no experience necessary.

If all the animals of the world were cute and cuddly, would we still see the act of 'hunting' the same?

This is a piece done for the Calgary Expo art book this April.
I wish I had more time on this one but I like the idea.

Things have been quite busy these past few months... many great and exciting things happening this year.

"Every year, a young member of the Fuz'hy Lindt Tribe who has come of age must prove his worth by donning the blessed regalia of the sacred carrot and leading the Tribe on the Great Hunt. Only the fastest and bravest of warriors will ensure a successful Carrot Run, providing food for the Tribe through the winter."

This is a piece I did for the "Strange Behavior" challenge. It was hard to find the time between work but I had a wonderful experience.
Reminded me of the good ol' college days, waking up early and staying up late to finish our projects.
It has been a pleasure contributing art along side my friends and so many other talented artists.

Great topic as well! Thx CgSociety!

I'm also planning on submitting this to Expose 6!

Here's a fun animated gif I put together to show a bit of work in progress.

Big Foot 's New Friend or Yeti 's New Friend?

Hi all,
Here's a piece I did call "Big Foot 's New Friend" but now that I think about it... shouldn't it be called "Yeti 's New Friend"? It's just that I like the words - Big Foot. It just sounds funnier.
I did this initially as a demo for my digital painting class on schoolism.com (Shameless plug.. sorry about that) but after looking at it for a while I thought Big Foot looked lonely so I painted in a little buddy for him.

Anyhow it's a painting about love and friendship

I also submitted this to Exotique 3 so wish me luck guys!

Character Concept - Mayan Samurai by Alberto Ruiz & Bobby Chiu

This is a collaborative piece drawn by Alberto Ruiz and painted by me, Bobby Chiu. (I've waited MONTHS to write that sentence!)

Now, you might be thinking that Mayan and Japanese are worlds apart. Believe me, I thought so too at first, but then decided that "Ancient Japan Sketches" needn't be taken so literally. The Japanese elements were present, so we included her. I wouldn't want to tell this Mayan samurai woman that she's not getting into the book, would you?

I've been a fan of Alberto's for a while now. I've always admired his unique "Alberto Ruiz style" of designing women. And at the 2006 Toronto Fan Expo, I had the opportunity to tell him this in person. Ironically, he came over to our booth before I had a chance to find HIM. He introduced himself and said he was a fan of our work! This just goes to show: the internet is an incredible networking tool.

I wasted no time in asking him to be a guest artist for this book. Then he came up with the idea for a collaborative piece, and just like that, "Mayan Samurai" was born.

Hi everyone,

For the first time, I’ve asked someone to share my books with me.
Kei Acedera has stepped up from being a regular contributor to our books to becoming the new art director here at Imaginism Studios. Her ideas and sense of design are wonderfully appealing and come almost effortlessly.
And when you see her insanely cute and beautiful fairies, you’ll see why we chose this book to be the debut of the Art of Bobby Chiu and Kei Acedera.

Guest Artists:
Sergio Aragonés - Mad Magazine legend of legends, creator of "Groo the Wanderer"
Gavin Ball - Great Draftsman and all around nice guy
Linda Bergkvist - No fairy book would be the same without Linda. Multi award winning artist
Kevin Dart - I had the pleasure of meeting this amazing talent in San Diego.
Kitty Fung - Our friend and Anime prodigy
Robin Mitchell - My brother from another mother. Great friend and character designer.
Justin Ridge - A true talent. It was an absolute pleasure to have Justin in my book.

Here's a peek of the cover. Drawn by Kei Acedera. Painted by me, Bobby Chiu
I came up with this little creature just doodling different elements. It's a great creative exercise and helps you think about objects and forms in pieces so you can put different parts from different things together to create something new. I'm happiest with this creature's eyes, which I modeled after frog's eyes, because they're expressive and emotional. Even though it's weird-looking, you can tell this isn't a malevolent creature; it's all in the eyes and face.
Many childern grow up with a dog in the family. I happen to be one of those people.
I had a big ol' german sheppard named "Major" and we were best buds. Whenever I'd get grounded (which was quite often), the only time I would be allowed out was when I took Major for a walk. In my teenage years Major and I spent alot of time together.
He was a protective companion, like dogs can be. He wouldn't let anything harm me... and no one would try.
For no other reason then because I fed him and walked him, I was his "master." He had unconditional love and loyalty to me and would obey my every command. He was willing to lay his life down for mine and I was willing to do the same.
When I read about the theme "Master and Servant," the relationship between a boy and his dog stuck out among the rest.
I wanted to illustrate the special bond a person has with his/her dog. Through this theme, I came up with an idea: A boy takes his dog to get his bike back from the local bully.
The twist: the dog is the biggest scariest mutant dog ever.
The setting: It takes place in the ghetto. A place that would be dangerous for even grown-ups, but beware, it's not the gangsters or criminals you should be most frightened of - it's a 6 year and his gigantic mutant doggie.
The senerio: The boy takes his dog to get his bike back from the neighbourhood bully. The bully is unaware of the boy and dog's presence and is laughing while telling the story of how he took a little boy's shiny new red bike. He's about half a second away from realizing that that was THE DUMBEST THING he's ever done in his life.
It's been a pleasure.
